definitely a must to see this year: paradise lost turning into 25. on stage with fellow swedes, katatonia, whom are tending their sound to tool or perfect circle nowadays, rather than being static at the gothic-shoegaze edge. italian female-led lacuna coil is better to forget about once and for all, they are extremely lucky to got invited.
so katatonia opened stage and their set based on all the classic tunes of viva emptiness, a record which became an instant milestone back in 2002. their current sound is more subtle and solid than it was when this album was recorded, which pushed guitars a bit back and synths forward, actually i was enjoying it more this way. still a brilliant band live, need to catch them when they return to town.
the brit lads tried to surprise with their opening: mortals watch the day / so much is lost / remembrance - immediately blown away. and their intro was persephone, a cult song of the goth dead can dance. perfect to start with and involve audience from the very beginning. none expected to hear a track from their long-laid debut, well rotten misery was really a massive killer with their present guitar tones, though the following one second caused a wider moshpit - who would have thought? as in their present state this band is still capable of delivering a few memorable albums and i am really looking forward to get them all. last but not least: without any doubt this was my best pl show ever. focused, unexpected, perfect.
